Bertha (Birdie) Leier was actually born February 12, 1890, the daughter of Lawrence Leier and Amelia Nowasky. She married Laurence Burton Hunter on Christmas Eve 1918. They had one child, Ruth Hunter, born August 9, 1919. By 1925, they were living in Westerly, Rhode Island. Sometime after 1930, Laurence and Birdie divorced. Birdie remarried, to 66-year-old widower, Hobart Clarke Saunders, in Westerly. Two years after Birdie's death, Hobart died. Hobart, Birdie and Hobart's first wife, Alice (Allie) Stannard are buried together at River Bend Cemetery in Westerly.
