Laurence was Bertha (Birdie) Leier's first husband. They had one child, Ruth Hunter, born in 1919. Laurence, Birdie and Ruth moved to Westerly, Rhode Island around 1925. Laurence and Birdie eventually divorced. He moved back to Massachusetts and married Adrienne Edmonds.
