Katherine Kuntze's Death Certificate
Last update 8/25/2024
On the 1910 census, Edith Kuntze is listed as living with her Aunt Amelia Leier and her children. On February 25, 1912, Edith was 21 years old and unmarried when she prematurely gave birth to this baby girl. She named her Katherine Kuntze (Kunzer). The father of baby Katherine was a man named John J. Sullivan. Edith had contracted Erysipelas Fasciitis, a flesh-eating skin infection, while she was pregnant. Mother and daughter lingered several weeks in Kings County Hospital until Katherine died from malnutrition on March 23. Basically, she starved to death because her mother was not able to offer her sustenance. Edith died the next day on March 24. They were buried together in the same unmarked plot at Evergreens Cemetery with Edith's grandmother Louise Pubanz Nowasky and where her mother Bertha would go when she died in 1923.
